Genealogical Society of Whitley County

The purpose of the Genealogical Society of Whitley County is to collect and preserve the ancestry of Whitley County families, to stimulate and instruct all persons who may be interested in genealogy, to develop and record historical and vital facts of Whitley County and the people who originated, developed and helped build the communities within the county, and to encourage the development and maintenance of genealogical files.

Membership in the Genealogical Society of Whitley County is open to anyone who is interested in Genealogy. The Cost of Membership is $15.00 single --- $20.00 family (one mailing address) per year. Membership year is July 1st - June 30th. Membership includes the quarterly newsletter: Whitley County Roots. (Index to surnames in the Whitley County Roots)

Research Policy: It is the policy of the Genealogical Society of Whitley County that we do not do volunteer research for individuals. The only free service offered is a check of the Society's surname file. The person interested in any research service may wish to place a query in our newsletter for a fee to be determined by the membership. On request to the Corresponding Secretary, the person may be provided with a list of members who will research for hire. The Society does not assume responsibility for their work or for the members of the Society.

First Families of Whitley County

Pioneer Families of Whitley County

The Genealogical Society of Whitley County, Indiana announces two new programs honoring early settlers of Whitley County. Direct descendants of early settlers are eligible to become a member of First Families of Whitley County and/or Pioneer Families of Whitley County.

The First Families of Whitley County program honors the settlers who resided within the present-day boundaries of Whitley County, Indiana on or before December 31, 1850.

Those who settled in Whitley County between December 31, 1850 and December 31, 1870 will be recognized through the Pioneer Families of Whitley County" program.

Applicants must prove that their ancestor lived within the boundaries of present-day Whitley County, Indiana within the designated time period AND that they are direct descendants of the said ancestor. If approved, applicants will be issued a certificate suitable for framing. Applicants who submit the necessary documentation by July 1, 2002 will be issued "Charter Member" certificates upon approval.

The application form includes complete instructions as well as guidelines for acceptable evidence and can be obtained at the GSWC website or from the GSWC at PO Box 224, Columbia City, IN 46725. Applications will also be available at the monthly meeting, which is held at the Peabody Public Library at 6:30 pm on the third Thursday of each month.

The Bulletin is published by the Whitley County Historical Society, quarterly: March, June, September and December and is mailed to all Society members. The Bulletin is intended to bring to light and preserve stories, articles, anecdotes, account of personalities and events, and pictures, all relating to Whitley County and its history. Contributions are encouraged. Single copies of The Bulletin are available at the Whitley County Historical Museum or by mail for $4.00. The Bulletin prints an annual index of names and articles.

The Whitley County Historical Society

The Whitley County Historical Museum is located at 108 West Jefferson Street, Columbia City, Indiana 46725 in the former home of Vice President Thomas R. Marshall: "What this country needs is a good five cent cigar." A Curator and other staff members are available to assist you. The Curator's Report appears in each issue of The Bulletin.
